How often does a team miss a sure-fire double play?

John Dewan's Stat of the Week

Ever watch your favorite team miss a double play when it was easy?  The rules of baseball scoring prohibit the official scorer from giving anyone an error, but you know in your heart someone deserves one.

Baseball Info Solutions goes beyond the traditional scoring.  In our Enhanced Scoresheet project, we expand our scoring to cover Defensive Misplays, Good Fielding Plays, Catcher Blocks, Hustle Plays, and Umpire Errors.  Three of the 55 Defensive Misplays help answer this week's question (first fielder to touch the ball mishandles the ball and only gets one out, pivot man not getting off the throw, and the pivot man making a poor throw).

With or without an error involved, in 2005 missed double plays happened about 18 times a week!  It's probably not a coincidence that the World Champion White Sox were the best at avoiding this problem.

Check the chart below to see where your team ranked in 2005.
