The Boras Clients

Half of super-agent Scott Boras' eight advisees in the 2005 Draft went about where they were expected to go. The other half saw themselves drop lower than anticipated.

Mike Pelfrey was to first to be drafted, at 9th overall to the Mets. Mark Pawelek went to the Cubs at 20th overall and was ironically the first player in the draft to have his signing announced. The Cardinals selected Tyler Greene with the last pick of the first round, 30th overall. Jason Neighborgall was a wildcard in the draft and went with the first pick of the third round to the Diamondbacks.

Craig Hansen and Luke Hochevar were candidates for the first pick in the draft. Without reportedly asking for a large bonus price, Hochevar would have ordinarily been selected in the top 5 or 7 picks. Hansen could have gone at about #9 or #12. Instead, Hansen slipped all the way to the red Sox who happily gobbled him up at #26. The Dodgers did the same with Hochevar, but not until the supplemental first round at 40th overall. Mark McCormick was also a supplemental first round pick, going at #43 to the Cardinals, which wasn't much lower than expected.

Taylor Teagarden, however, was the last to stay on the board, not going until 99th overall in the 3rd round to the Rangers. Questions about his bat, mixed with the Boras Factor, caused him to slip. Perhaps he'll consider a return to the University of Texas for a senior season.

Boras' Advisees

Will their relationship with Boras cause them to slip in the draft?

Luke Hochevar, rhp, Tennessee

Probably the most polished college starting pitcher. Likely top 5 selection.

Mike Pelfrey, rhp, Wichita State

6'7" flame-thrower. Could challenge Hochevar as top pitcher selected.

Mark McCormick, rhp, Baylor

The most electric arm. But wildness and inconsistency cause concerns.

Craig Hansen, rhp, St. John's

College closer is the most ready for majors. Outside chance to be #1 overall.

Taylor Teagarden, c, Texas

Tremendous defense and game-calling. Late first-round selection.

Tyler Greene, ss, Georgia Tech

Stock slipping because of erratic play. Boras factor may cause further slide.

Jason Neighborgall, rhp, Georgia Tech

Was most potent HS arm in '02 draft. But has never found the plate enough.

Mark Pawelek, lhp, Springville (UT) HS

Top HS lefty. Expected to be mid-first rounder. Boras' only HS talent in draft.
